Who wouldn’t want a career where they could see the world, experience all sorts of new things, and meet new people? That is the life of an expatriate and how he manages to work in a business abroad, and you can learn all about it in this week's video episode.
On this most recent episode of CFO Weekly, we sat down with John Kramer CPA, CFO of BCC Engineering about his experiences as an expatriate, especially his time working in places like India, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia.
He had a lot to say about both the process and the cultural differences that he noticed. Particularly around three areas:
-
Religious Differences: Especially in Saudi Arabia, there was a whole set of differences to absorb. Coming from the United States, where the church/state separation is fairly concrete, it was a bit of a culture shock.
-
Cultural Differences: Even something as simple as hiring women for his team was considered progressive.
-
Language Differences: His advice? Lean into the discomfort. You don’t have to be fluent, but even trying to speak to someone in their native language made a huge difference.
